2015 to 2016

2015: The Year I Gained

2015 was the year of big change for me. I gained a lot.  But I also witnessed too many suffer with cancer and other diseases. The fight continues for my cousins Raffaela and Oscar and my 10 year old nephew Adam. I pray for them and everyone else going through this as I am reminded life is precious. 2016 will bring more awareness and support for everyone in need. #TeamAdam will use for The Force for us all!

I ran my first half marathon in 2015.  Then a second, third and fourth. Overtraining and injury stopped me from running as much as I wanted to this year, but 340 miles this year isn’t too shabby considering the circumstances. I was thrown off my groove and gained 20 pounds while staying in the same clothes, albeit more snug, but I gained knowledge by the end of the year in anatomy and nutrition. This knowledge will stay with me and will help going forward. I’m at race 40 of my #50by50 so I’m still on track and will succeed.  I plan on running the Blue Bell Fun Run as my 50th race.  Hope to see you there to help me celebrate! #JustMoveYall

2015 Medals

I quit my great career of 20+ years in 2015. Toughest and best decision I’ve ever made. And yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I worked at a gym to gain new experiences. I became an Ambassador for RunnerBox, Esprit de She and FitFluential.  I also became a contributor to Rare Life and was hired as the Social Media Coordinator for Onurmark Productions running point for their Run Houston! Race Series, Bayou City Half Marathon Series and Bayou City Triathlon Series.  I filed my dba for my future personal training coaching business, CyFit Freedom. I returned to college to become a Personal Trainer. I was the oldest in my class other than my instructor and it was awesome! While the state of Texas sees me a Personal Trainer, I’m studying to become a Certified Personal Trainer through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). I will proudly serve other women to help them achieve their health and fitness goals as I continue on my journey. I will change the perception of what a Personal Trainer looks like too. This will happen in the first quarter of 2016.

LSC Certifications

Our son and oldest daughter both graduated college in 2015 and have begun their own careers out in the “real” world. I’m super proud of them both. Our youngest daughter turned 16 and now has her driver’s license. Errands anyone? 🙂 We won Houston Texans season tickets and became more active in our fan love. My mother retired after 58 years of teaching and we celebrated with her in NC. I really thought she’d never retire, but she showed me! 🙂 My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and we partied again in NC with family and friends. I traveled for fun more than ever before in 2015. Vegas, Canada, Philly, Boston, just to name a few. Check out my silly 2015 video here:

I gained a love for coffee in 2015. Strange, but true. I also enjoy cooking when I plan. I can make some yummy monkey bread and cookies now. I find myself more busy today than a year ago, but with different priorities.  I gained many new friendships in 2015. Kindred spirits really and women I’d call my family without hesitation. You know who you are. I have some mad #GirlLove for you. 🙂

I’m not certain where 2016 will take me, but I do know that my focus on helping others with daily resolutions will lead the way.

Four Things I Learned from My FIRST Half Marathon

Last weekend I ran and completed my first half marathon at the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Half Marathon. I was also able to raise $1,100 for military veterans and Team Red, White and Blue participating in the Run For a Reason program.  Between running for myself, for those who can’t, for our military veterans and for my buddy Asher in FL, I chose this race since it was in my hometown and I had cheered on my family members in years past.  I had heard the public support throughout the route and organization of the event was stellar. I was right and had an amazing day! AHMAZING!


I wasn’t out there to break any records. After all, this was my first time running this distance.  My goal was simply to finish and to have the pride of knowing I was able to run my goal of 13.1 miles. 13 point one FREAKING miles. Wow! If you had told me a couple of years ago I would have accomplished this, I would have laughed in your face. I would have NEVER believed I could do this in a million billion years, but I did! And here are 4 things I learned:

1. Joining a running club is a life changer.
Not to say that running on your own and following a plan won’t work, but for me, I needed support and others to hold me accountable. Meeting every Saturday morning at 5am for training runs for months was tough, but exciting.  There were even training runs at the track or trails during the week, but I was unable to make those due to my work travel.  I followed the plan from my hotel gym or local gym to stay on schedule.  This could be the first time I’ve stuck to an “exercise” plan ever. I’ve also miraculously changed from being a grumpy morning person, to a happy morning person. Miracles do happen! haha Best part of joining a running club?  I have made life long friends … FAMILY … in my running buddies from the Cypress Running Club!  CRC!  CRC!  🙂

2. Trust your training.
CRC provides training plans to their members and this was instrumental in my being able to succeed. My coach, Mark Peterson, gave great running and training tips as did other seasoned runners in our club.  Having them as a resource is just awesome. THANK YOU MARK and CRC! I am a visual person so printing my CRC training plan for my half marathon and being able to check off each run as completed as the weeks progressed, gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. The training plan worked for me just as it had for others before me.  I even survived the dreaded taper time and now understand how it all comes together.


3. Stretch and Roll with it!
Lack of both is what led to my Gecko incident in the fall of 2013 and threw my C25K training off track. Well, that and running wrong (take a free running clinic y’all). There will always be pros and cons with each, but for me, it was a saving Grace and I believe helped me stay healthy and strong. And seriously. It hurts so good!

4. “Looking” fit and “Being” fit are not always the same thing.
One of the things I noticed running my first half marathon was that the participants of the half and full marathon are all ages and SIZES. There was even an older man juggling balls and running the full marathon next to me.  He totally passed us.  Juggling!  We cheered him on too.  🙂 I used it believe only super athletes ran these races. This is so NOT true. Oh, there are super fit athletes that do of course, but anyone can if they have the drive and determination I saw on that route.  It was truly inspirational. If you ever lose faith in humanity, go watch a marathon. Your eyes may get sweaty from seeing the hearts of those running. 🙂


Running is not all rainbows and kittens with puppies in fields of daisies.  I did hit my “wall” at 10 miles. The index toe of each foot suddenly felt as if my feet were on fire making each step painful, but my awesome running buddies Jan, Jen and Melissa slowed with me and encouraged me the entire time to help me finish. The cheer support of strangers pushed me as did that last mile of exhilaration. Seeing the FULL marathon runners on the street next to us about to finish in the same amount of time it took us for HALF that distance gave me motivation to the finish.


The emotions I felt crossing that finish line are difficult to explain because I was happy and crying all at once. Excessive Pride. Extreme Joy. Absolute Astonishment. Badassery. I had just run a freaking half marathon. Like FOR REAL y’all! I ran better than the government too! Haha. All mixed together as a medal gets put around your neck. I felt I could do ANYTHING!   What’s next?  Oh, it’s a doozy.  More on that later.  🙂


Race #27 of my #50by50 did not disappoint. The cheer support by the public, my running club and my family was more than I imagined. CRC had a tent set up at mile 7 and my husband Steve, son Jacob and BFF Viviana were there too with homemade signs for me. It meant so much to see them all there! They even had signs from friends who couldn’t make the race.  Those were awesome too and made me laugh and smile.  There were people yelling in support of everyone for every inch of every mile. I never once felt alone. I felt like every person cheering was my close family and it was one big party! One big party where you run 13.1 freaking miles! 🙂

Moral of the story? Don’t think you can’t run a half marathon because you’re overweight or aren’t an athlete in the best shape. YOU CAN! Get that ok from your doctor. Find a running club. A training plan. Make a goal. And just move y’all! If I can, you can. It’ll be the best decision of your life!

My Top Runner Gift Ideas

Has it really been 4 months since I posted to my blog?  SHAME ON ME!

Well, hopefully today’s post will help make up for it.  🙂



After a year and a half of running regularly, I thought I’d share some of my favorite “running” items purchased or received as presents from family and friends.  Of course, every runner has a list of gadgets and goodies they’d prefer, but I hope this list will help with that surprise gift this holiday season for someone you love.

GPS watch with HRM  ~ My parents gave me a Garmin Forerunner 210 last year for Christmas and I really like it.  I had been running for several months without a heart rate monitor, but I wanted to target my workout intensity and use an HRM help me get there.  Not only does the GPS tell me how far I’ve run/walked, it monitors my heart rate and provides the pace as well.  When I get home, I charge it through my laptop which then automatically logs my exercise to Garmin Connect.  It even works with MyFitnessPal to share calories burned so that’s one less thing to have to enter manually.  🙂

Road ID ~ It’s super important to have emergency contact info on you while on running outside.  I hate to think of anything bad happening to someone, but being prepared is key to safety.  My road ID has my husband’s cell phone number, my blood type, allergy info, etc.  I wear the band on my wrist like a bracelet so it can easily be read if needed.

Hips Sister ~ I wear this product every time I run.  I keep my keys and phone and identification in my hips sister with no worries about them ever being lost or falling out.  A definite two thumbs up!

Event Clips ~ OMIGOSH where do I begin to share how amazing these clips are for your race bibs? No more poking holes in your running shirts and they stay in place!  They’re made in Great Britain, but arrived within one week of purchase.  Awesomeness!

Runner’s Daily Log ~ I’m the type of person who likes to keep track of how I’m feeling after a run.  This may wear off after a few years of running, but for now, I love it.  I can look back and see my accomplishments as well as what worked and didn’t work for me.  I tend to forget so having it written down helps me remember and keeps me motivated.

I <3 To Run Wall Calendar ~ Visualizing my accomplishments is another motivator for me.  My wonderful husband had this large wall calendar dry mounted at Michael’s arts & crafts store and it sits in my office.  I love coloring in each day I run and look forward to a more colorful 2015!  Here’s mine today.

Running The Wall ~ More visualization and this is one of most treasured running items.  Every day I walk into my office, I see the reward for all my sweat, tears and joy that running has provided me.  The 45 pounds of weight loss (so far) and all the miles I’ve run (over 500 so far this year alone … that’s A LOT to me!).  Ah, I love seeing this every day.  EVERY. DAY!
