March 19: Today in Texas History #txhx

Today in 1826, Cherokee leader John Dunn Hunter arrived in Mexico City to renew talks with the Mexican government for a land settlement in Texas. He was promised land to the individual Indian settlers, however they were not allowed a tribal grant with the right to self-govern. Hunter wrote about his experiences in his book Memoirs of a Captivity among the Indians of North America.

“There is a growing feeling that perhaps Texas is really another country, a place where the skies, the disasters, the diamonds, the politicians, the women, the fortunes, the football players and the murders are all bigger than anywhere else.” ~ Pete Hamill
