March 15: Today in Texas History #txhx

It was today in 1836, that Texas Revolutionary soldier Lewis T. Ayers was captured by the Mexican forces of General José de Urrea.

Ayers was involved in the Battle of Refugio where he served with Captain Amon King and was one of 33 prisoners captured and led out to be shot, but was saved when Colonel J. J. Holzinger halted the execution to spare German prisoners. Though he was not German, Ayers was also spared and set free supposedly because he gave a Masonic sign that General Urrea recognized.

Divine intervention?

“All new states are invested, more or less, by a class of noisy, second-rate men who are always in favor of rash and extreme measures, but Texas was absolutely overrun by such men.” ~ Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas
