On this day in 1899, the Thirty-Third Infantry Regiment … or the “Texas Regiment” because of the popular belief that it was composed of ex-cowboys … was formed. The regiment was raised specifically for duty in the Philippines and served there from October 27, 1899 until March 2, 1901.
Organized at Fort Sam Houston, the Texas Regiment was one of the most famous American combat units of the Philippine Insurrection and distinguished itself in the battles at Magnataram, Tirad Pass, Vigan, and Taguidin Pass.
“Texas is the crossroads of the world. Everything here is big.” ~ Bobby Lee.
